All the dogs I saw on our vacation in Peru were smiling, friendly, and looked like they were having a wonderful time together.

Almost none of the dogs wore collars. They acted completely independent, but still welcomed a bit of petting and something to eat. As filthy as many of the dogs were, not all of them were strays. They keep to a certain territory and can be seen sitting or sleeping dutifully in the doorways of the families they belong to.

All these dogs seem really relaxed. They socialize, go for walks, get food, and sometimes into trouble. People love their dogs and treat them respectfully.
